Back in 2015, Hackney Herbal set out on a mission to show people how to incorporate herbs into their lifestyles, for health and improved wellbeing. The idea came from a desire to create more value out of the herbs that were being grown in private, public and community gardens. We began growing herbs in a patchwork of sites around Hackney and from these we created unique herbal tea blends. The funds from the sale of these went to fund free community activities in Hackney, bringing people together to learn, share knowledge and be inspired.
In 2019 we moved into a garden space of our own at Trowbridge Gardens in Hackney Wick. This has been a huge change for us and has allowed us to quite literally put longterm roots down in the land. In this space we are creating our dream herb garden as well as a forest garden and focusing on creating spaces where people, plants and wildlife can thrive. At the garden we run a variety of gardening/volunteering sessions, community projects, free events and ticketed workshops.
Since the beginning we have also been passionate about delivering creative and education workshops. These are designed to share knowledge and inspire people about the extensive uses of herbs. We are a social enterprise so buying a pack of our tea, attending a workshop or booking us to provide a bespoke event helps to fund our community work promoting good mental health.
